Here is the story of the very first senior we have helped with the Coalition Assistance Fund (CAF)
Written by a Mobile Senior Coalitions Member
“I have a person that I feel would qualify for this CAF program and would be a great person to do a ‘test run’ on. Her name is ‘Betty’ (not her real name). Her story begins with her participating in the Volunteer Guardian Program initiated by Judge Davis. I see her weekly since she is the legal guardian for one of our residents.
We met in February of last year and she has never asked for anything. ‘Betty’ also started the ‘Love Hat’ program for cancer patients at the Mitchell Cancer Center. You see, she is also a cancer survivor. Two years ago while she was undergoing chemo and began losing her hair she noticed how devastating it was to others so she began making what she refers to as ‘Love Hats’ for all the people in the infusion center. She named it that because each hat is made with love.
Recently on one of her visits, I noticed she had to adjust her orthopedic shoes several times. When I asked her what is wrong, she said that her shoes had stretched, and she really was not suppose to wear them every day, but it was all she had. She shared, “I cannot afford another pair.”
I asked her how much the shoes cost and she replied, “$150 to $175.”
I explained what our organization (Mobile Senior Coalitions) did and told her I would run it by the group.
This was our first Coalition Assistance Fund (CAF) Award and this feels wonderful!
We encourage all members to look around the community at the seniors they serve and look for the small ways that we can make a difference in the life of a senior. It may not seem like much, but helping with some item that costs between $150 and $600 can make a huge difference in the life of a senior living on a fixed income.
